Living and working in Lincoln it is hard not to notice the increasing number of homeless people around the streets of Lincoln. Recent figures from Shelter show that there are over 300,000 people considered homeless in the UK. At least 500 of those people are within Lincolnshire. Last year alone the Nomad Trust supported at least 300 people with a connection to Lincoln. As Estate Agents we wanted to find a way to help the homeless community. We got in touch with the Nomad Trust to find out more about what they do.
The Nomad Shelter on Monks Road opens each night and provides homeless people with a safe place for the night. Offering a bed, an evening meal and the opportunity to talk to people. This shelter is the only emergency night shelter in the county. Since 2011 there has been a 60% Increase in homeless households since. The facilities that the Nomad trust provide is essential in order to support the homeless people in the area. At present there is no where for homeless people to go during the day.
The Nomad Trust is building the Nomad Centre. This centre will be on St Rumbold Street. Providing homeless people with somewhere to go in the day. This will give people a place to go to seek medical and mental health help, someone to talk to and somewhere warm and dry. As well as offering emergency accomodation at night above the day centre. The day centre will provide a one stop shop to look at the needs of the homeless and provide relevant support.
Last year The Nomad Trust supported nearly 300 people, funds raised through house clearance and furniture donations will support those who find themselves homeless and in need of vital help
From April 2016 – March 2017:
* We provided emergency overnight accommodation for 279 individuals
* 83% were male and 17% were female
* Those supported ranged from 18 to 67 years of age
* 25% were aged 25 and under
* 10% were aged 50 years and over
Figures since April 2017, show a similar number of people needing our support, 128 of whom have not accessed our shelter in previous years.
At Lovelles we are proud to be able to help. We are donating a percentage of our fee for every home we sell, to the Nomad Trust in order to contribute to the centre. We are also taking part in the sleep out at the Cathedral.
Branch Partner, Craig Andrews commented:
“Although we are in the business of helping people to find their dream homes, we’re also only too aware of the number of people in the area who don’t have a roof over their heads at all. Having heard about the ways in which the organisation focuses on a range of services to address the problems behind homelessness in the first place, our team were eager to offer their support. As well as donating a fixed percentage of our sales fees each month, we will also be undertaking a range of fundraising activities over the course of the year including Tough Mudder and the Lincoln 10k.”
Rachael Baxter from YMCA Lincolnshire said:
“Homelessness is not going away and there is an ongoing need for our
services. What is vital in breaking the cycle of homelessness is holistic care. We need to provide people more support and give them with somewhere to go in the daytime, somewhere where they can access key services to address some of the reasons behind their reasons for becoming homeless.”
How you can help….
Could you Volunteer for The Nomad Trust? Do you have Enthusiasm? Compassion? Motivation?
Each year volunteers carry out vital tasks that help support those that are homeless, without them the charity could not achieve all they do.
Maybe you would like to volunteer for a few hours a week or for one-off occasions to support the charity?
Retail & Warehouse Volunteer
Our charity shops and furniture warehouse help us to raise funds that go back into supporting those who are homeless. Our volunteers help to serve customers and sort donations in the shops. We also need people to accompanying our drivers to collect items from house clearances and prepare these for sale in our furniture warehouse.
Donated Goods Volunteer
The local community have generously provided food for the homeless for nearly 30 years. Volunteers kindly help the charity to sort these donations enabling us to provide meals and drinks 365 days a year to those that access our services. Clothing donations are also sorted and help us provide replacement items to those who sometimes end up at door with just the clothes on their back. Just a few hours a week can really make a huge difference.
Food Service Volunteer
Volunteers work from 19.45 each evening to help serve food and drinks to those accessing the shelter. This is a really important volunteer role as the first thing our residents need after a day on the streets is a drink and something to eat. Training and support is provided and all volunteers work alongside two-night staff.
Fundraising & Events Volunteer
Maybe you would like to assist the charity in delivering talks, accepting donations or speaking to children in schools who want to learn about homelessness? Various opportunities exist to attend events, all of which help raise awareness and funds.
